On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, reaffirms the continued commitment of Italy and the Farnesina to preventing and combating all forms of violence and discrimination against women, in Italy and throughout the world.
“Violence against women is an unacceptable violation of human rights and an obstacle to the development of our societies. Italy must continue to be at the forefront of promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the protection of the most vulnerable. We must build a future where no woman fears for her freedom or her life. It is a responsibility that concerns the institutions, civil society and each of us”, the Minister declared.
The elimination of gender-based violence remains a cornerstone of Italian foreign policy, supporting international campaigns against harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation and early and forced marriage. Italy actively contributes also to the work of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Combating all forms of violence against women and girls is also one of Italy’s priorities in its term as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the three-year period 2026-2028.
This year too, the Ministry and the foreign network are joining the global campaign “Orange the World” promoted by UN Women, with the lighting of the facade of the Farnesina and participating in awareness-raising initiatives aimed at civil society and young people.
The Farnesina and the Italian diplomatic-consular network also renew their commitment to the “red benches” initiative, a universal symbol of the fight against femicide and a visible warning against all forms of violence.

The promotion of educational courses that include training in combating violence also continues, as exemplified by the scholarship program launched in memory of Giulia Cecchettin “Invest Your Talent in Italy”.
Finally, under the Agenda “Women, Peace and Security”, Italy carries out initiatives to foster the participation of women in conflict prevention, mediation and peace-building processes, through the National Action Plan and the Network of Mediating Women of the Mediterranean, promoted by our country.
