Where to apply for a visa

The Italian Embassy in Asmara is the only EU representation to issue Schengen visas in Eritrea.

The Embassy issues all types of Schengen and national visas for Italy.

Under representation agreements, the Embassy also issues short-term Schengen visas (up to 90 days), type “C,” for the following countries: Germany, Sweden, Malta, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Finland, Slovenia, and Portugal.

Regarding visas for Italy, additional information is available on the “Visa for Italy” portal:

Applications, duly completed and accompanied by the required documentation, may be submitted at the Visa Desk from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., by prior appointment, free of charge, to be scheduled by calling the switchboard (+291 1 121528) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.

Following the request for preliminary consultations by the Schengen countries pursuant to Article 22 of the European Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No. 810/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council), all visa applications from Eritrean citizens will be subject to a Schengen clearance procedure lasting eight calendar days, plus the time required for processing. Therefore, please allow for this period when making an appointment at the Embassy and preparing your application.

All information on applying for visas for the EU countries represented is available at the Consular Office, along with the form to be completed by the applicant.
