Vehicles and driving licenses

What must be presented to the Consular Authority in order to obtain a driving licence renewal certificate?

  1. For the medical certificate to be issued, a valid passport and an Italian driving licence must be submitted at the Embassy;
  2. Medical certificate issued by the Embassy’s medical officer Dr. Yosief YACOB and ophthalmologist Dr. Kahsay FESSEHATZION;
  3. Payment of the stamp duty and driver’s licence confirmation in local currency (Nakfa).

How is it issued?

A specific ‘Consular attestation confirming the validity of the driving licence’ is issued, which is valid only for the period of residence abroad and must be kept together with the original expired licence and, upon request, must be shown together with the latter;
Upon re-entry into Italy, the licence holder is obliged, within six months of re-acquiring residency in Italy, to renew the licence itself according to the ordinary procedure provided for in paragraph 8 of Art. 126 of the Rules of the Road, therefore even if the renewal made at the Consulate is still valid;
It will always be necessary to keep the certificate attached to the driving licence, in particular to carry out the medical examination for confirmation of validity in Italy, in order to prove to the examining physician that the licence has been renewed abroad and therefore that there have been no periods without driving.
